Our XPA Gen3 Modular Amplifier System allows you select the perfect amplifier – by configuring your amplifier with exactly the number and type of amplifier channels you need. We’ve chosen the most popular configurations, and given each an easy-to-remember model number with its own product page on our website. However, since not everyone wants one of the standard models, this page is dedicated to those of you who wish to design your own custom made XPA amplifier. Choose your perfect combination of amplifier channels and power and we’ll build it for you.

Each XPA Gen3 amplifier chassis has seven bays and can be populated with anywhere between two and seven modules, each of which can be a 300 watt x 1 single-channel module or a 65 watt x 2 two-channel stereo module. The two types of modules can be mixed and matched in any combination in a single chassis, offering you unheard-of flexibility to build the exact amplifier configuration you need.

To create your perfect amplifier, use the Channel Configuration selector to pick the combination of modules you need. Each option has a two digit model number. The number to the left of the decimal point shows you how many 300 watt Mono modules you have; the number to the right shows you how many 65 watt/channel Stereo modules you have. Remember that each Stereo module gives you two 65 watt channels.

A new approach to amplifier design.

When we set out to design our ground-breaking new X-Series XPA Gen3 amplifier line, we analyzed everything in every amplifier we’ve ever made; from front to back; inside and out. In doing so, we discovered several areas where our years of experience, and recent advances in audio technology, enabled us to make significant improvements on our previous amplifier designs. After carefully weighing all the pros and cons, we kept the best features of our original designs, added a new set of features, technologies, and improvements. The result became the foundation of our new line of audiophile amplifiers; the modular X Series Amplifiers.

Our new XPA Gen3 modular amplifier system is a real game changer! These new amplifiers are fully modular and configurable at the time you order them. All of our current models are built on the same chassis. This chassis houses the massively overdesigned, heavy duty, fully regulated, switch mode power supply (SMPS) that powers all of the amplifier modules, and we’ve incorporated a microprocessor controlled front panel which monitors and controls everything. You can then choose to populate the chassis with a wide variety of configuration options to suit your needs.

Some options include: anywhere from two to seven channels at 300 watts/channel, anywhere from four to fourteen channels at 65 watts/channel, and a variety of combinations, one of which is almost certain to be the perfect solution to your current requirements. Several of our most popular options are featured on their own pages on our website. The Build Your Own page is for those of you who wish to create your own custom configurations.

And, if you need more channels in the future, you can easily have more channels added later. Why should you have to buy another amplifier when you’re perfectly happy with your current one, but you need a few more channels? Each amplifier chassis is fully modular, so there’s no need to get rid of a perfectly good two-channel amplifier when you want to move up to surround sound. Of course, if all the slots in your current chassis are populated, you can always add more channels by adding another matching chassis.

The current options in the XPA Gen3 modular amplifier system will soon be joined by a matching chassis, which features a specially designed power supply, which will be available with one, two, or three high-powered 600 watt/channel fully differential fully balanced reference amplifier modules.

More power, Scotty!

With audio amplifiers, everything starts and ends with power. Of course, the sound quality is critical, and that’s where really well designed amplifier circuitry comes in. However, if your power supply isn’t up to the task, even the best amplifier circuitry in the world won’t live up to its full potential.

All of our XPA Gen3 amplifiers utilize a massive regulated switch mode power supply. This sophisticated and intelligent monster is capable of delivering over 3 kW (that’s 3 kilowatts) of clean audiophile grade power to whichever amplifier channels need it – with extremely high efficiency and absolute reliability.

Our advanced power supply design combines the dynamic capabilities of classic transformer-based designs with the efficiency and careful regulation of modern switch mode designs. Big heavy transformers and giant filter capacitors are rendered obsolete; they just can’t compete. It’s a revolution in power design, and it’s the backbone of the new XPA Gen3 modular amplifier system. It’s the power supply of the future – perfected, and it’s here today.

Let’s talk amplifiers

Our XPA Gen 3 modular amplifiers use the same basic circuit topology as our legendary XPR series amplifiers. A unique differential input stage, with a cross-linked current source, drives a balanced voltage amplification stage, and this advanced input circuitry delivers an incredibly accurate and pure audio signal to the complementary, fully discrete output stage. Together they deliver a holistic, natural, and powerful listening experience. Low-level musical details and dialogue emerge from a deep black background; musical crescendos are delivered with both stunning impact and precision. The wide bandwidth, low distortion performance of the XPA Gen3 reveals every nuance of your high- resolution sources, and it has plenty of power to drive even difficult loudspeakers with absolute authority and control.

Both of the amplifier modules available for the XPA Gen3 modular amplifier system use a fully analog Class A/B output stage. The 300 watt single channel modules utilize our highly regarded Soft-Switch™ Class H  power supply topology, which increases their efficiency significantly, without compromising the audio performance you’d expect from an Emotiva amplifier. At lower power levels, the amplifiers operate on a lower supply voltage to minimize quiescent power consumption and standby power losses. When the amplifier control circuitry detects a fast rising input signal that will exceed the lower power voltage rails, it instantly switches to a higher voltage rail to ensure that the signal can pass cleanly without clipping. This process happens on a continuous basis, in real time, and it allows much greater overall efficiency than previous designs. In actual operation, the new amplifier modules run cooler, which contributes to much longer component life, reduced power consumption, and increased reliability; all of the benefits of a classic Class A/B design without the wasted heat, weight, and power of a conventional fixed rail design.

The 65 watt x 2 stereo modules each deliver two completely independent channels of pure Class A/B audio power, and are sonically perfectly matched to the more powerful single-channel modules. (We decided not to use our Class H power supply topology in the 65 watt x 2 modules because the improvement in efficiency it yields at that power level doesn’t justify the increase in complexity. They sound exactly the same, and we here at Emotiva are always in favor of using the technology for each individual application that delivers the best sound quality in the most sensible way.)

Real Power. Really.

You can’t even begin to compare the power capabilities of most existing AV receivers to the massive power capacity of our new XPA Gen3 amplifiers. Even many “high-end” power amplifiers are unable to render modern audio recordings and movie sound tracks with the proper authority and finesse, and most AVRs don’t even come close. Some of them come up with interesting power ratings that exaggerate their performance, or only rate their products with one or two channels driven, and many simply look good on paper, but fall short when you actually hear them.

All of our standard models of the Emotiva XPA Gen3 amplifier are rated with all channels driven – continuously – into 8 ohms. We also provide other ratings – to make it easier to compare our amplifiers to everyone else’s. You’ll also notice that, while we offer full specifications on our standard models, we don’t provide every measurement on every possible combination of modules. That would just plain be too complicated.

Music is dynamic…. and it’s rare for more than two or three channels to draw anywhere near full power at the same time – anywhere except on a test bench. Thanks to our friendly 3 kW monster, you can count on every channel of your XPA Gen3 being able to deliver every watt it’s asked for, whenever your music needs it, and to do it without even breaking a sweat. If you don’t see a particular power rating, just take our word for it that, with real musical content, you’re going to see the same output from any channel, or any two channels, as the two-channels-driven rating shows for your amplifier’s individual modules.

The bottom line is that our new XPA Gen3 amplifiers will deliver the full power and majesty of today’s high definition movie and music sources, with perfect control, and without a hint of strain, or the tiniest loss of detail. Modular Construction

The XPA Gen3 modular power amplifier is comprised of a heavy-duty chassis, which houses the oversized power supply, and up to seven amplifier modules. The XPA Gen3 can be purchased with anywhere between two and seven amplifier modules installed, and additional amplifier modules may be installed as more channels of amplification are needed (up to a maximum of seven modules). The front panel display and protection system are designed to work with the maximum number of channels, and so need not be updated when the XPA Gen3 is expanded; on the rear panel, slots not occupied by amplifier modules will be covered with protective cover panels.

Note: To ensure that additional amplifier channels are installed properly, and function to our specifications, additional amplifier modules must be installed by Emotiva, or by your local authorized Emotiva service representative.

A Word About Power Ratings

Music is, by its nature, dynamic. While it’s relatively common for the two main channels in a stereo amplifier to be asked to simultaneously deliver high power levels, it is very uncommon for more than two channels to be called upon to deliver high power continuously at the same time, and this almost never occurs outside of laboratory test conditions.

In order to deliver the most dynamic performance where it counts – with real music – we have designed the XPA Gen3 modular power amplifier with a single immense power supply, which is able to deliver massive power continuously to any two channels, and to deliver huge amounts of power dynamically to any number of channels when and if called upon to do so.

If you have an XPA Gen3 modular power amplifier with more than two channels installed, ANY TWO CHANNELS ON THAT AMPLIFIER will be able to deliver the same output power as the TWO CHANNELS DRIVEN rating for that amplifier module type; and ALL channels will be able to deliver their full TWO CHANNELS DRIVEN rating short term.
